It's a combination of written and hands-on field tests that are a true test of professional landscape skill and knowledge. Tests are judged and monitored by industry peers. Typically, judges will be owners or high level managers of landscape contracting companies with extensive experience or professionals who have already passed the test themselves. To pass this test and become certified places the person among an elite group of professionals that really take their craft seriously.
What knowledge is tested?
The CLT Exterior is in three modules. Certification consists of passing common elements and one of the modules (installation, maintenance or irrigation.) The modules represent specialized sub-categories of expertise and the common elements are areas of landscape knowledge that are common to all. Practical safety knowledge and proper procedure are stressed throughout the entire test. Typically, applicants will show up on a weekend and take the common elements and the module they've chosen. If they do not pass the first time they are allowed to retake the stations they didn't pass during the next testing cycle.
